Ideas for how to come up with band names

Naming a band can be a tough process- you want something that reflects your sound, but is also unique and memorable. Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:

1. Look to literature: many bands have named themselves after characters or themes in novels (think J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" or F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby").

2. Go local: choose a name that pays homage to your city or state (like San Francisco's The Grateful Dead or Detroit's White Stripes).

3. Use wordplay: play with puns or make a clever reference to popular culture (such as Weezer, which is a play on the medical condition "wry neck," or Vampire Weekend, which references the 1979 horror film "The Lost Boys").

4. Get personal: consider using your own name, or the names of family and friends (John Lennon named the Beatles after his childhood dog, while Lady Gaga took her stage name from Queen's hit song "Radio GaGa").

5. Keep it simple: sometimes the best names are short and sweet (like Elvis Presley or Madonna).

Whichever route you choose, be sure to pick a band name that resonates with you.
